Book Review: New American Commentary: Joshua
David M. Howard's commentary on Joshua is a good, general English commentary. It provides a reference for preparing sermons and background material for in-depth exegetical study. The book does not deal with issues like form and structure, as the Word Biblical Commentaries do, but I don't think that was the intention of this book, nor the New American Commentary series either.
Instead of an author's translation, the book presents the NIV, like the other commentaries in the New American Commentary series. Overall, I would recommend this commentary for someone untrained in Biblical languages, but interested in studying the book of Joshua in-depth.
Please keep in mind that the New American Commentary: Joshua is not designed to be read as a "book" but rather used as a reference. I actually read the whole book to satisfy a class requirement, but feel that there would have been better uses of my time.
